The California HMO healthcare method has been around for many years and it is a very popular way of receiving the medical care you need at a price you can afford. The California HMO will take care of your visits to the doctor; preventative care such as immunizations and cancer screening tests (such as mammograms) and a variety of other necessary services. When it comes to a California HMO there is no deductible that must be met before the insurance will begin to take effect and while there are co-payments that are required on prescriptions they are very minimal (such as five to eight dollars per prescription).
A California HMO can come in different forms. There is the group or staff model of HMO that can be obtained if you work for an employer who provides health insurance. With this model all healthcare professionals work for one HMO and the y see as many people per day as they can. With this set up there is generally one central clinic or medical office where a doctor can see patients. There are other kinds of HMOs where units of physicians and/or a selection of doctors on their own who have their own offices sign contract agreements with more than one HMO to provide medical services to patients. This latter type of California HMO is sometimes called a network or in other cases is an Individual practice association (or abbreviated to IPA).
If you decide be insured by an HMO you will be given a list of physicians names and from the list you must choose one to become your primary care physician. It is this doctor whom you must go through for all medical concerns and for all routine care such as annual check ups, inoculations, special tests and so on. If you need a referral to a specialist the primary care physician must make the decision and from there the referral will go through.
